What is a Counselling Psychologist?

Counselling Psychologists have undertaken a minimum six years of training. They work with clients to examine emotional difficulties and explore the underlying problems that may have caused them. They work across a diverse range of human problems.

What happens in a first appointment?

This is an opportunity to meet and discuss what has led you to consider Psychological Therapy, or Life Coaching.

I will be interested in learning more about you and your life so far. We will talk about your goals and what you are hoping to achieve.

I will seek to answer any questions or concerns that you may have about the process and what it may involve. You will be completely free to go away, have a think about it all and decide whether or not you wish to proceed with any further appointments.

If it seems, to either of us, that I am not able to meet your needs; I will try to advise you of other potential sources of help or support.

How many appointments will I need?

This varies according to the nature of the problem and would be discussed in the first appointment.

Occasionally someone just wants to know that there is a psychological explanation for what they are experiencing; or would like advice, or guidance, with a specific issue. If this is the case then a single appointment may be all they are looking for and that is fine.

If you are looking to make some changes to thoughts or behaviours, it is likely to require a minimum of six sessions.

Complex or long standing difficulties are likely to involve more sessions.

I do understand that you may have a specific budget in mind and would be happy to discuss what it may be possible to achieve within this.

For those who wish to explore their life experiences in greater depth I am happy to offer long-term work.
